Abstract
Objective: This study aims to develop a conceptual model of Iranshahr thought in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh to explain responses to natural and human-induced hazards. The research problem concerns identifying and formulating manifestations of this thought in narratives in which a threat or disruption to biological, territorial, social, or political order occurs and a response to it is undertaken. The study seeks to explain the patterns derived from these narratives across three domains: physical-territorial, cultural-social, and mythical-symbolic.
Method: This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach based on library research. The research corpus consists of narratives from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh selected on the basis of the presence of a threatening event, a response to that event, and sufficient textual evidence for conceptual analysis. The data derived from the analysis of the narratives were organized, according to their dominant dimensions, into three analytical domains: physical-territorial, cultural-social, and mythical-symbolic. These three domains are analytical tools used in the present study as interpretive categories, while contemporary concepts of hazard management serve solely an interpretive function.
Findings: The analysis of the narratives shows that responses to hazards in the Shahnameh are represented across three interconnected domains. In the physical-territorial domain, the creation and organization of infrastructures and living spaces, such as the Vara of Jam/Yima, the Band-e Shushtar, and Siyavashgerd, serve protective and material-reconstructive functions. In the cultural-social domain, justice, the remission of taxes, the opening of granaries, and the distribution of resources during Pirouz’s seven-year drought, as well as Kaveh’s resistance to Zahhak’s tyranny, contribute to maintaining social cohesion and preventing social collapse. In the mythical-symbolic domain, the divine Farr, the assistance of the Simorgh, and Rostam’s Seven Labors provide semantic, psychological, and identity-based resources for confronting threats. These domains are interconnected within an interactive and synergistic model.
Conclusions: Based on the findings, the conceptual model developed in this study indicates that responses to hazards in the Shahnameh can be understood through the relationship among the three domains of physical-territorial, cultural-social, and mythical-symbolic dimensions. Within this model, wisdom and prudence, justice and social cohesion, and the Farr and other semantic and identity-based resources strengthen the capacity to confront and recover from hazards. From this perspective, hazard management is not reduced to merely technical or political action; rather, it constitutes a process of preserving or restoring order across material, social, and semantic domains. This formulation can provide a conceptual basis for rethinking resilience and hazard management in contemporary Iran.
